Beaver Township Child Drowns in Standing Water
A 20-month old Beaver Township child drowned in standing water in the yard at his home on Tuesday. Fire and Rescue responders performed CPR and transported the child to Mid-Michigan Medical Center in Midland but resuscitation efforts at the hospital failed as well. This is a truly tragic death. I feel terrible for the family of this child.
This incident stresses the importance of constant parental supervision of children around any type of water. This is often an overwhelming task, especially when there are a number of children around and other major distractions. Drownings happen very quickly in lakes, swimming pools, and even bathtubs and adults simply cannot let a child out of sight even for a minute.
Quite frequently, even highly trained lifeguards at swimming pools are distracted just long enough to miss a child struggling under the surface of the water. For this any child safety groups recommend the use of personal flotation devices, like life jackets or vests, even in swimming pools and water parks. This is, along with strict supervision, can reduce the number of child drownings and these tragic losses.
